The perpetrators are making calls claiming to be Ionia County Health or Benzie Leelanau Public Health representatives. They would then offer medication and at-home tests for COVID-19.

Of course to make those promises possible the scammers would demand Medicaid or Medicare information. Acquiring it allows them to sell Medical Identities on the Black Market and use them to buy drugs and drug paraphernalia, or to illegally receive medical procedures.

Medical Identity theft crimes are usually hard to track down.

According to the authorities, the scammers are currently attacking people from 248 and 989 area codes. The residents are encouraged to stay alert, not engage in any conversations with the suspicious callers and report them to the police.
