The current pandemic has already caused a dramatic rise in lay-offs that has left many tenants unable to pay the rent on time. Despite a moratorium on evictions which was placed by Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak on March 29th, many local landlords were still pressuring people.
This prompted the North Las Vegas City Council to hold an emergency meeting on April 8th.
The meeting resulted in the unanimously approved city code changes on the housing stability. Now landlords and property managers who will try to evict tenants for failure to pay rent during the shelter-in-place situation will be fined.
The administrative penalties may result in a $1,000 fine, revocation of business licenses and permits, or six months of jail. Of course, landlords will still be allowed to evict those who pose a threat to others.
